Date: Thu, 13 Jun 1996 From: LizBeth258 Subject: Starlog BSG quotes.. Hi All! I was doing my laundry the other night (but that's not important) when I had to go out and buy something to read while waiting. Since they were out of Newsweek, I splurged on the _Starlog_ 20th Anniversary issue. To my pleasant surprise, they had a list of memorable quotes over the mag's 20-year run. Not surprisingly, there's too much from Star Trek (Starlog -- the original ST fanboy mag), but there are some nice treats for the "lesser knowns" such as BSG (there are even a few pics) and BBC productions like Blake's 7 (admittedly not my favorite), Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Dr. Who and even some Red Dwarf stuff. Well, I figured it would be nice to list the BSG-related quotes here (just in case no one wants to spend $10 on it), complete with my own comments from the peanut gallary. There are some on-BSG quotes that were hysterially funny but didn't include here. If someone asks for 'em, I'll list those too. The BSG quote list is as follows... *"It's a sheer joy making things that don't exist" -John Dykstra, FX wizard (p. 16) John Dykstra decides to admit that he's seeing things: *Issue 17 Special TV report ABC's Battlestar Galactica premieres Sept. 17 and will feature scenes deleted from the theatrical release. - (p.17) Said movie, BTW was seen in the U.S. _after_ the series was cancelled... *"I wasn't really interested in art. I was more interested in working in the aircraft industry." -Ralph McQuarrie, conceptual artist, Star Wars, CE3K, and BSG (p.17) When good engineers go bad.... *"Galactica is my first opportunity to play an upbeat character with a sense of humor who enjoys life." -Dirk Benedict (p.17) Translation: Beats playing a wimpy nerd that turns into a killer king cobra as a result of a mad scientist experiment...again! *"I see Apollo as an idealized character. He's as much a Renaissance man as I can make him." -Richard Hatch (p.17) Translation: I didn't want the part to begin with, but I'm learning to get over it now *"Galactica has infinite possibilities. In fact, my character may be abnormal in the sense that she may be more independent than most of the women in classic space adventures." -Maren Jensen (p. 18) Irony is beautiful...in retrospect. *"Every dramatic vehicle has its own life force, and Galactica is no exception. We're real human beings living in outer space and looking for a home." -Loren Greene (p. 18) Greene sums up _why_ we still like this show... *"One of Boomer's strong points is that he has a great background in just about everything." -Herb Jefferson Jr. (p. 19) Translation: Boomer's a crutch for lazy writers I _know_ he's a crutch. As long as I don't grow pointy ears, I'll be OK *Issue 33 Log Entries "Galactica Discovers Earth" is being filmed. Set 30 years after the original Galactica, new stars include Kent McCord as Captain Troy, Barry VanDyke as Lieutenant Dillon and Robyn Douglass as Jamie. -(p.20) I suppose this means that we can't say that we weren't warned. *"I did the first scene [of Galactica 1980] with safety pins in my back and the guys - Kent [McCord] and Barry [VanDyke] - their pants were ripping out at the seams." -Robyn Douglass (p. 20) In which trouble rears its ugly head over the happy little set.... *"The old Galacica was depressing. It was so sad; every show was a tragedy." -Robbie Rist (p.20) Keep in mind that ol' Robbo here played Dr. Zee in the G80 pilot. I rest my case.... *"The role required something that I have, which is a timeless quality. If you look at my credits, practically everything is either in the past or the future" -Jane Seymour, on her role in Somewhere in Time (p.21) In which Jane shows how humble she is...even if is the truth...(Notice how she's still free-falling through period pieces?) *"I'll be damned if I'm going to do 'Charlie's Angels in Space' with a guy, a girl and a robot." -Gil Gerard, Buck Rogers (p.21) Okay, so I'm stretching it...but you gotta admit it _is_ hillarious. *Issue 41 Log Entries A Los Angeles Court rules that Battlestar Galactica did not infringe on the copyright of Star Wars. -(p.21, 1990) Nothing like a little public vindication.... *"Buck Rogers, I believe, is an illegitimate child of Galactica. I only hope Galactica won't turn in its grave." -Wilfrid Hyde-White (p.23) Wait! What's that whirring noise? I think it's the sound of a show spinning..... *"You don't get a great script every week in a series but if you're lucky, you'll get a good script every fourth one." -Jonatan Harris on Lost in Space (p.31) Okay, so not strictly about his turn as the lightbulb-in-residence on BSG, but still applicable.... *Issue 127 Obits Lorne Greene 1915-1987. Known to millions as Ben Cartwright on the TV Western Bonanza and Commander Adama on Battlestar Galactica. -(p.36) In which a man and a voice with presence goes silent.... *"I can't go anywhere! People are screaming out of taxis, 'Hey Baltar! It's the curse of the Cylons!'" -John Colicos (p.38) In which Mr. Colicos realizes that when he dies, "Count Baltar" and "Battlestar Galactica" will appear distressingly often in his obituary.... *Issue 174 Obits Wilfrid Hyde-White, 1903-1991. Among his numerous other roles, Dr. Goodfellow on TV's Buck Rogers. -(p. 44) I wish I could remember the name of the councilor he played in the BSG pilot.... *Issue 183 Medialog The Sci-Fi Channel debuts September 24 (1992) with a visit to a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars. Other shows that will be featured are Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Space:1999 and Battlestar Galactica. -(p.45) Like a bad penny, BSG returns to the public eye.... *"Star Wars ripped off ideas too." -Richard Hatch (p.47) Umm, is it _really_ necessary for you to be so defensive? Liz ;)
