C. Wayne Coleman The smell that ran the length of the galley was most unusual. Intoxicating, yet sweet, soothing and exciting. Soon it began running through the air purification system. Due to newness and the nature of this unique new food supplement, the bio filters were not configured to pick it up, and the aroma filled the ship. Before long, everyone aboard could smell the sweetness. They inhaled deeply, as a paradox of emotions flooded their senses. It was something new, more powerful than the full bloom of the floral gardens on Caprica, the crisp smell of the oceans on Aquria, or the mountain streams at early dawn on Picea. The entire chef's staff was gathered around the senior pastry baker, in awe of what was going on. Their complete and undivided attention held by a silver colored pot. The pastry baker continued to stir the pot, and the substance began to shimmer in the light. Never before had any of the galley crew seen such a thing. It thickened more and more as the chef continued stirring. The ribbons became more and more defined in swirls and curves, of various shapes and sizes. No one was completely sure of what was there, but they all knew the Galley was about to become the most popular spot in the fleet. Other than the wooden spatula stirring around the sides, and folding the substance continually, one could have heard a nano-chip drop. The doors slid open, as Adam walked in. The smell filled his nostrils, and he didn't say a word. None of those gathered around the pastry chef noticed his presence, and Adama did nothing to make himself known. He followed the smell across the galley to where the staff was gathered, and began peering over a shoulder to see what was going on, and to find the source of the aroma filling the ship. Even the Great Adama was curious. One of the workers shifted, and then noticed Adama was standing behind him. It caught him off guard, and with out hesitating announced Adama's presence. "Commander in the Galley." Everyone jumped to attention, and turned to face Adama. "As you were." Replied Adama. The senior officer in the Galley approached Adama. He was a little embarrassed at what just occurred. His galley was taught, and run tight, this type of occurrence did not happen, ever. Nervously, he apologized. "My apologies Sir, we didn't see you come in." "Don't worry about it. What ever it is that you've got going on down here, has gone through the entire ship, and the entire staff and crew are talking. What is it?" "They were originally beans that we traded some power converters a while back, on Herhsia. They said it was a very popular food on their planet, once it was processed. This is our first attempt to see what we could do with it." "Did you run these through the proper channels to make sure they were all right?" asked Adama. "Yes sir, the medlab, the bio lab, and the agro department all cleared them for use." "Good. Now, one simple question. What is this stuff called anyway?" "The Hershians called it "Chocolate." According to the briefing they gave us, it has many uses and functions, mostly in the areas of pastries. We've never seen anything like it before. The smell that's filling the ship is from the processing, the roasting, mixing, cooking it down and so on." "The smell is fantastic. When are going to get to try some of this chocolate?" "We should have something ready by the end of the day." The pastry chef then transferred the shiny brown chocolate to another bowl, filled with other ingredients. He scraped out nearly all of this new chocolate from the pot, as what he could. He began stirring it all together, and once this new chocolate was well incorporated into the other ingredients, it became one homogenous mixture. He then poured the entire contents into another pan. Adama looked on. All though maintaining himself in the position of commander, he could not help but have that look of anticipation. "What's that going to be?" Asked Adama. "The Hershians said it was something called "Chocolate Fudge Brownies". They said that is was probably the number one use for it in baking. We're going to find out soon though." The pastry chef had the pan filled, and was smoothing it out across the top. When he finished, he saw Adam standing there. He held up the spatula, and looked at Adama. "Would you like a taste sir." Everyone just froze, and the senior officer wasn't sure what to do. He'd kill him later, but not in front of the Commander. Adama didn't have to think for a split second, and he accepted the gift of a taste of chocolate from the chef. As graciously as he could, he held it up, stuck his tongue out, and tasted this new and wonderful mixture.
